Man's Search for Meaning

Kant says that freedom desires both itself and the freedom of others. To say that subjectivity is the truth is to highlight a way of being, then, and not a mode of knowing; truth measures the attitude (“passion”) with which I appropriate, or make my own, an “objective uncertainty” (the voice of God) in a “process of highest inwardness.” In contrast to the singularity of this movement, for Kierkegaard, stands the crowd: “the crowd is untruth.” The crowd is, roughly, public opinion in the widest sense—the ideas that a given age takes for granted; the ordinary and accepted way of doing things; the complacent attitude that comes from the conformity necessary for social life—and what condemns it to “untruth” in Kierkegaard's eyes is the way that it insinuates itself into an individual's own sense of who she is, relieving her of the burden of being herself: if everyone is a Christian there is no need for me to “become” one.

The movement is regarded as a precursor of Surrealism. Some critics regard HAPPENINGS as a recent development of Dada. This movement incorporates environment and spectators as active and important ingredients in the production of random events. The irrationality comes from systems of domination and oppression which benefit a minority and not the majority – so the distribution of wealth which causes thousands to die in poverty every day is ‘irrational’ but not accidental. Within this nexus there is a relationship between consciousness and structural existence which always acts to restrict what is possible until the moment when the possible becomes a historical definite moment at which human action breaks down the fetters of the structure and a revolutionary change occurs English as a Second Language: download epub English as a Second Language: IGCSE Teacher's Book (Cambridge International Examinations) here.
