Introduction to geochemistry (McGraw-Hill international series in the earth and planetary sciences)
Graphical methods are commonly used for determining whether the data support an interpretation of mixing of two potential sources or fractionation of a single source. Research must be carried out under the direct supervision of the student's faculty advisor. During a phase change, equilibrium exists between phases, so if the G is zero, we know that the reaction is in equilibrium. Romain has taught students at various academic levels from A-Level to Masters Degree and has been involved in several research projects with BSc and MSc students.
Published proceedings of the MSA and GS short courses will appear as a volume in the Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry series. Workshops are are shorter, focused topic or technique, and generally do not result in a publication: MSA Cutting Edge Workshops. 1/2 to 1 day, focused on an area of current interest, led by experts but aimed at a general audience, particularly one including graduate students and early career researchers. (Deep Carbon....or Mars Mineralogy would be examples of this new type of workshop introduced last year...) MSA Applications and Techniques Workshops. 1 day or more in duration, and concerned with offering expert training in applications of a particular experimental or theoretical/computational technique or method. (Examples would be the 'XRF' or 'THERMOCALC' Workshops) Most workshops will be of either one of these types, but that does not preclude occasional examples which cross these boundaries or have elements of both a Workshop and a Short Course Geochemistry of ground water read here Geochemistry of ground water in mine drainage problems, 1964, Geological Survey Professional Paper, P473A. for free. Freezing does not affect the composition of the water but can break the bottles in transit; for this reason, many users prefer plastic bottles. Our experience suggests that caps with conical plastic inserts (e.g., "poly-seal" caps) are the most reliable, followed by teflon-lined caps. For extended storage, use of glass bottles and waxing of the caps is advisable. Sample-size is lab-dependent; typical volumes range from 10-60 mL online.
